Voice Cues and the Run Player
What the voice says, how it works with music and a locked screen, and what happens when you pause or end a run early.
Start a Run
On Home, tap Start session. The player shows a big timer for the current step, and a voice tells you what to do. You don't need to look at the screen at all.
What You'll Hear
- "Let's go. Warm up. Walk easy." when you start.
- "Run." and "Walk." at every switch.
- "Cool down. Easy walk." for the last few minutes.
- "Paused." and "Resumed." when you pause.
- "All done. Great work today." at the end.
While the screen is on, each switch also gives a short vibration.
With Music or a Podcast
Keep it playing. When a cue comes, your music gets quieter for a moment, then comes back. You don't need to pause anything.
With the Screen Locked
Lock your phone and put it in your pocket. The timer, the voice cues and your distance keep going. While the player is open, the screen won't turn off by itself, so locking it is up to you.
On Silent
The cues still play when your iPhone is on silent. To make them quieter, use the volume buttons during a run. There's no setting to turn the voice off.
Headphones
The cues play wherever your audio goes: AirPods, other Bluetooth headphones, or the phone's speaker if nothing is connected.
Pause or End Early
- Pause stops the clock and the distance. Resume picks up where you left off.
- End, then End session, finishes the run early. The run is saved to Apple Health if you've allowed it. The session is ticked off if you did at least 60% of the planned time; if not, it stays open for next time.
Distance and Your Route
The first time you start a run, iOS asks for your location. Just5K uses it only during the run, to measure distance and draw your route at the end, and doesn't send it anywhere. If you say no, the timer and the voice still work; you just won't see distance or a map.
Tip: Going for a run with no signal? That's fine. The player works offline, and GPS doesn't need mobile data.
