Is Runna Good for Complete Beginners? Runna vs Couch to 5K
Runna now has a walk-run plan for people who have never run. What it asks of you, what it costs after week 1, and when a simpler Couch to 5K plan is the better start.

Key Takeaways
- Runna has a real plan for people who have never run. It's called New to Running: walk-run intervals, no pace targets, two to four runs a week, six to 16 weeks long.
- Only week 1 is free. Since June 5, 2026, Runna's beginner plans need Runna Premium: $19.99 a month or $119.99 a year in the US, after a 7-day free trial.
- Most of what you pay for is built for later: race plans with target paces, watch sync, 10K to marathon training. A first 5K needs much less, and free walk-run plans cover it.
- It makes sense if you already know you'll keep going, or if you'd pay for Strava anyway: Strava sells a Strava + Runna bundle for $149.99 a year in the US.
Checked against Runna's help center, its pricing page and the US App Store in October 2026. Runna has changed its beginner plans twice this year, so check before you subscribe.
Runna Isn't Just for Marathoners Anymore
Runna made its name with personal plans for half marathons and marathons, with a target pace for every session. Strava agreed to buy it in April 2025, and it still runs as its own app.
In January 2026, Runna rebuilt its beginner plans and said nearly half its users call themselves new or beginner runners. So yes, Runna is for beginners now too. The real question is whether it's the right first app for someone who can't run yet.
What Runna's Beginner Plan Looks Like
- Three plans start from zero. New to Running is for people who have never run. Return to Running is for coming back after a break. Path to parkrun builds walk-runs up to a first 5K parkrun.
- Setup asks about you, not your pace. How long since you last ran, how often you exercise and what kind. You don't need a 5K time.
- Your first workout is a walk-run. Runna doesn't publish one fixed week 1, because it depends on your answers. Its own guide describes a typical walk-run as 1 minute of running and 2 minutes of walking, repeated for 20 minutes.
- Two to four runs a week, your choice.
- Six to 16 weeks long. Runna recommends at least eight.
- No pace targets. The beginner plans are run by feel, easy enough to hold a conversation. The pace coaching Runna is known for belongs to its race plans, not these.
- It adjusts when you miss runs. The plan works around the sessions you complete, and after more than three missed workouts or a missed week it offers to reschedule, extend or rebuild the plan.
That last point answers the usual worry about Runna, that its paces are too fast for beginners. On New to Running there are no paces to chase.

What $119.99 a Year Buys
- Plans for every distance after your first 5K, with target paces once you move to race training.
- Workouts on your wrist. The next two weeks of sessions sync to your watch: Apple Watch, Garmin, COROS or Suunto. You set it up in the iPhone app first.
- A plan that rearranges itself when you skip sessions, and a setting that eases the load for a few days when you're not feeling well.
All useful. None of it is needed to reach your first 5K. Three short walk-run sessions a week, at a pace where you can talk, is the part that works, and several apps give you that for free. They're compared in free couch to 5K apps, and five beginner apps side by side in the best couch to 5K apps for 2026.
Who Runna Is Right For
- You already know you'll go further than a first 5K: a 10K, a half, one day a marathon.
- You have a Garmin or COROS watch and want each session sent to it.
- You'd pay for Strava anyway. The Strava + Runna bundle is $149.99 a year in the US, sold through Strava.
- You want a plan that adjusts to your week instead of a fixed one.
Who Should Start Somewhere Else
- You're not sure you'll like running yet. $19.99 a month is a lot to pay to find out. A free walk-run plan answers that question first, and Runna will still be there.
- Even a minute of jogging feels like too much. A plan that starts with walking is gentler: Just5K's Gentle Start, or None to Run's Run Ready. More in None to Run vs Couch to 5K.
- You want the app to stay out of the way. Couch to 5K is the same three runs a week for everyone. Nothing to tune, nothing to decide.
Where Just5K Fits
Full disclosure: this is our app. Just5K is the simpler option: one fixed walk-run program, three short sessions a week, no pace targets, and a plan that waits for you instead of rearranging itself.
- Your first sessions are one-minute jogs between walks. A four-week Gentle Start begins with brisk walks if that's too much.
- No week 5 cliff. You run 10, 12, 15 and 18 minutes before your first 20-minute run in week 7.
- After your first 5K, a 5K → 10K program takes you to your first 10 km. That's where it stops: no half marathon or marathon plans.
- No watch app of its own. You can send a session to the watch's Workout app, and runs recorded there count toward your plan through Apple Health. It needs an iPhone with iOS 26 or later.
Just5K is in a free public beta on TestFlight now. After the App Store release, the whole road to your first 5K stays free: Gentle Start and all eight weeks of the 5K program. Only 5K → 10K after its first week needs Just5K Plus, a one-time $9.99, not a subscription.
FAQ
Is Runna free for beginners?
Not anymore. Since June 5, 2026, New to Running, Return to Running and Path to parkrun need Runna Premium. Week 1 of any plan is free, and there's a 7-day free trial.
Does Runna have a Couch to 5K plan?
Not under that name. New to Running and Path to parkrun do the same job: walk-run intervals that build up to running without breaks. Unlike Couch to 5K, you choose the length (6 to 16 weeks) and the number of runs a week (2 to 4).
Does Runna work on Apple Watch?
Yes. Runna has a watch app with audio coaching and vibration prompts, and it can also send your workouts to Apple's Workout app. Setup happens in the iPhone app, and Premium syncs the next two weeks of workouts to the watch.
Runna or Nike Run Club for a total beginner?
Nike Run Club is free, but its beginner guided runs start at 23 minutes of running. Runna's New to Running starts with walk-runs, but costs $19.99 a month after week 1. For someone who can't run yet, a walk-run plan is the better start, and there are free ones. More in Nike Run Club vs Couch to 5K.
Your first 5K doesn't need a $120 plan. Just5K's walk-run program is free all the way to your first 5K, and it waits for you when life gets busy.
