Free Couch to 5K Apps in 2026: What You Actually Get Without Paying
Plenty of couch to 5K apps say free on the App Store. Few of them are free past week 1. Which ones are free all the way to 5K, which ones only let you start, and when paying is worth it.

Key Takeaways
- "Free" on the App Store often means the first week. C25K by Zen Labs, Runkeeper and 5K Runner let you start for free and charge for the rest.
- Free all the way to 5K: the NHS Couch to 5K app (iPhone in the UK only), Just Run: Zero to 5K, and Just5K once it launches. You can also build the plan yourself in the Apple Watch Workout app.
- Nike Run Club is completely free, but it isn't a couch to 5K plan. Its first beginner run is 23 minutes long.
- Paying buys extras, not a better plan. Watch features, strength workouts, coaching. The walk-run plan itself is simple and free in several places.
Prices are from the US App Store, checked in September 2026. They change, so check the listing before you subscribe.
You Shouldn't Have to Pay to Find Out If You Like Running
Most people who start a couch to 5K plan don't know yet whether they'll stick with it. That's normal. It's also the worst moment to be asked for $75 a year.
The good news: the plan itself is simple. Short jogs, walk breaks, three times a week, a little more each week. Several apps give you all of it for free. Others give you the first week and then ask you to pay. Here's which is which.
Free All the Way to 5K
NHS Couch to 5K
The original, from the UK's National Health Service. The app is free with no in-app purchases, and the nine-week plan starts with one-minute runs between 90-second walks. It's the version most people mean when they say Couch to 5K.
The catch: on iPhone it's listed in the UK App Store only, so most people outside the UK can't download it there. It also has no Apple Watch app.
Just Run: Zero to 5K
An independent app, free with no ads. It has a nine-week zero to 5K plan, three 30-minute sessions a week, and a six-week 5K to 10K plan after it. An optional Premium purchase ($3.99) adds extras, including a preview of Apple Watch support.
It isn't related to us, despite the similar name.
Just5K
Full disclosure: this is our app. Just5K is free with no subscription in this version. Your first sessions are one-minute jogs between walks, and a four-week Gentle Start begins with brisk walks if that's too much. You move forward by finishing sessions, not by the calendar, and after your first 5K there's a 5K → 10K program.
The catch: it isn't in the App Store yet, and it has no watch app. You can join the waitlist to hear the day it launches.
The Apple Watch Workout App
If you have an Apple Watch, you already own a free interval timer. Since watchOS 9, the Workout app can run a custom workout with a warm-up, repeating run and walk intervals, and a cool-down, all without your phone.
The catch: you build each week yourself, and there's no voice cheering you on. There's a step-by-step in couch to 5K on Apple Watch.
No App at All
A phone timer and a plan on paper work fine. Our guide to starting running from zero has a first workout you can do today.
Free, But Not a Couch to 5K Plan
Nike Run Club
Completely free: no subscription and no in-app purchases. The coaching is excellent. But its beginner guided runs start with a 23-minute easy run, and its plans are a 4-week Getting Started plan and an 8-week 5K plan with speed and long runs. Great once you can jog for 20 minutes. Too much on day one. The full comparison is in Nike Run Club vs Couch to 5K.
Free to Start, Paid to Finish
These are fine apps. Just know what "free" covers before you get attached.
C25K by Zen Labs. The first week is free. After that, the Zen Unlimited Pass is $4.99 a month or $74.99 a year, and it also unlocks their 10K, half marathon and marathon apps. Apple Watch support is part of the paid PRO version.
Runkeeper. GPS tracking is free. In its "My First 5K" plan, the first three workouts are free and the rest need Runkeeper Go, $9.99 a month or $39.99 a year.
5K Runner. An eight-week plan. Its UK listing says the first four runs are free; the rest needs Premium.
None to Run. A 7-day free trial, then $6.99 a month or $39.99 a year. It's one of the gentlest paid plans: 12 weeks, starting with 30-second runs, and a real standalone watch app.
Runna. A 7-day free trial, then $19.99 a month or $119.99 a year. It has an 8-week walk-run plan for new runners. At that price it makes most sense if you plan to keep training after your first 5K.

Is Paying Ever Worth It?
Sometimes. Here's what the money actually buys:
- A plan on your wrist without the phone. None to Run and Runna do this well. The free Workout app does it too, if you don't mind building it yourself.
- A gentler plan. None to Run's 12 weeks and 30-second starts help a lot if Couch to 5K felt too hard.
- Strength work and coaching. Nice to have. Not needed to reach your first 5K.
What money doesn't buy is the part that matters most: showing up three times a week, going slowly enough to talk, and walking when you need to. That part is free everywhere.
