Can You Get the NHS Couch to 5K App Outside the UK? What to Use Instead

On iPhone, the NHS Couch to 5K app is only in the UK App Store. How to follow the same plan from anywhere, for free, and which apps come closest.

By Just5K

Key Takeaways

  • On iPhone, the NHS Couch to 5K app is only in the UK App Store. It isn't listed in the US store, or in any other country's store we checked.
  • The plan itself is free for everyone. The NHS publishes every run on its website and as a printable PDF, and its original audio podcast still plays on Apple Podcasts outside the UK.
  • Switching your Apple Account to the UK is a hassle. Apple asks you to spend your balance, cancel subscriptions and add a UK payment method first.
  • Free apps work the same way: Just Run: Zero to 5K, the Workout app on Apple Watch, and Just5K, which is in a free beta now.

App Store listings checked in October 2026.

Why You Can't Find It

A friend swears by it. A Reddit thread says it changed their life. The UK government says the NHS Couch to 5K app has had more than 7 million downloads since 2016. So you open the App Store, search for it, and nothing comes up.

That's not you doing something wrong. The app is published by the UK's Department of Health and Social Care, and on iPhone it's listed in the UK App Store only. Search from the US, Canada, Australia, Ireland or Germany and it isn't there.

On Android it's on Google Play. Whether it installs outside the UK depends on your account's country, and we couldn't confirm it either way.

The good news: the app is only one way to follow the plan. The plan itself is free and public.

Option 1: Follow the NHS Plan Without the App

The plan on the NHS website. The NHS shows every run, week by week, and offers it as a printable PDF. No country check, no account.

  • Three runs a week, with a rest day between them.
  • Every run starts with a 5-minute warm-up walk and ends with a 5-minute cool-down walk.
  • Week 1: eight 1-minute runs with 90-second walks between them, about 28 minutes in all.
  • Week 5 is the big one: three 5-minute runs, then two 8-minute runs, then 20 minutes without stopping.
  • Week 9: 30 minutes of running.
  • Repeating any run or week is fine. The NHS says so itself.

The original NHS podcast. Before the app, the NHS made the plan as a podcast, NHS Couch to 5K, one episode per week. It still plays on Apple Podcasts in the US, Canada and Australia. It was recorded in 2012, so the wording is a little different from today's plan, but a voice still tells you when to run and when to walk.

Don't mix it up with the BBC's The Couch to 5K Podcast: that one is conversation and encouragement, not guided runs.

A timer. If you'd rather not use either, any interval timer works. Set it once for the week and go.

Option 2: Switch Your Apple Account to the UK

You can, but it's rarely worth it. Before you can change your Apple Account's country, Apple asks you to:

  • spend any remaining balance on your account;
  • cancel subscriptions and wait for them to run out;
  • wait for pre-orders, rentals and pending refunds to finish;
  • possibly leave Family Sharing;
  • add a valid payment method for the new country.

Some of your apps and content may also not be available in the new region. All that for a free plan you can already read on the NHS website.

Option 3: Use an App That Works the Same Way

These follow the same idea: short runs, walk breaks, three times a week, a little more each week.

Just Run: Zero to 5K. An independent app, free with no ads. Nine weeks with three 30-minute workouts a week, then a six-week 5K to 10K plan. An optional $3.99 Premium adds more trainer voices, themes and a preview of Apple Watch support. It isn't related to us, despite the similar name.

The Workout app on Apple Watch. Since watchOS 9 it can run a custom workout with a warm-up, repeating run and walk intervals, and a cool-down, all from your wrist. You build each week yourself. Step by step in couch to 5K on Apple Watch.

Just5K. Full disclosure: this is our app. Your first sessions are one-minute jogs between walks, and a four-week Gentle Start begins with brisk walks if that's too much. The jump in the middle is smaller than the NHS plan's: you run 10, 12, 15 and 18 minutes before your first 20-minute run in week 7. You move forward by finishing sessions, not by the calendar. It's in a free public beta on TestFlight now, and after the App Store release the whole road to your first 5K stays free; only 5K → 10K after its first week needs Just5K Plus, a one-time $9.99. It needs an iPhone with iOS 26 or later.

If you don't mind paying:

  • None to Run is slower than the NHS plan: 12 weeks, starting with 30-second runs. A 7-day trial, then $6.99 a month or $39.99 a year in the US. More in None to Run vs Couch to 5K.
  • C25K by Zen Labs is the classic Couch to 5K app in the US store. The first week is free, then $4.99 a month or $74.99 a year.

If a story would keep you going, Zombies, Run! has its own 5K plan inside an audio adventure. The full list, with what each app gives you for free, is in free couch to 5K apps, and the side-by-side of five apps is in the best couch to 5K apps for 2026.

FAQ

Why isn't the NHS Couch to 5K app available in the US?

The NHS hasn't said why. On iPhone it's listed in the UK App Store only, so it doesn't show up in other countries' stores.

Is there a US version of Couch to 5K?

There's no official US version of the NHS app, but plenty of apps in the US store follow the same kind of plan. Just Run: Zero to 5K is free; C25K by Zen Labs gives you the first week free and then charges a subscription.

Is the NHS Couch to 5K podcast still available?

Yes. The original NHS podcast, one episode per week of the plan, still plays on Apple Podcasts in the US and other countries. The NHS website no longer links to it, and it was recorded in 2012.

Can I do Couch to 5K without an app?

Yes. The full plan is on the NHS website and in its printable PDF. A phone timer and a pair of comfortable shoes are all you need. If you want a first workout to try today, see how to start running from zero.

Your first 5K shouldn't depend on your App Store. Just5K starts with one-minute jogs or brisk walks, tells you when to run and when to walk, and keeps the whole road to your first 5K free.
